In this presentation, Marina Reis will address the role of gaze behavior in video-mediated environments. Previous research with face-to-face data has revealed the interactional functions of gaze (see Rossano (2012) for an overview). Recent studies explore the role of multimodality in video-mediated settings (e.g., Licoppe & Tuncer, 2019). However, the functions of gaze in these settings remain understudied. Interactions over Zoom or Skype, for example, are described as fractured ecologies (Luff et al., 2003) since participants do not have access to the environment of their co-participants. In these interactions, direct mutual gaze is not possible (Ilomäki & Ruusuvuori, 2020; Mlynář et al., 2018) and participants either look at the webcams or to the co-participants on the screen (Due & Licoppe, 2020). This lecture will be divided as follows: First,   previous studies on gaze in face-to-face interactions and studies of gaze conduct in digital settings will be discussed. Subsequently, the researcher will present the preliminary results from a pilot study conducted using a subset of Skype data from the corpus ViMELF (2018). In this pilot research, the gaze conduct of participants is analyzed using multimodal conversation analysis.

Marina Reis de Souza is a doctoral researcher in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Hildesheim, where she also works as a research assistant. She holds an M.A. degree in German and English Linguistics. Her main research interests include conversation analysis, multimodality, and video-mediated interaction.
