"Exploring Gender Representation in Reggaeton Lyrics: A Qualitative Corpus Linguistics Analysis"

Resumo
This proposed study aims to investigate the portrayal of women in a corpus of 60 selected reggaeton songs in Spanish. Utilizing corpus linguistics methodology, the research will delve into the linguistic strategies employed in describing female characters in lyrics, including figures of speech, direct descriptions, similes, and animalization. Additionally, a partial multimodal analysis will be conducted to examine the gestures and body language featured in their respective Youtube videos, providing a more comprehensive understanding of how gender is represented visually and physically. By compiling and analyzing a corpus of lyrics and their associated multimodal elements, including bodily movements, the study seeks to unveil prevalent themes, stereotypes, and attitudes towards women within the reggaeton genre. This research offers valuable insights into the representation of gender in popular music, contributing to broader discussions on cultural norms, identity, and social dynamics.

"Multimodal aspects of COVID-19 related neologisms in written and oral discourse: A cross-cultural analysis of press conferences in French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish"

Resumo
The ongoing project “Language change in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: A corpus analysis of neologisms” has shown that structurally similar languages (European French, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese) deal differently with similar issues such as the integration of anglicisms, word formation strategies, morphosyntactic and semantic aspects related to the use of neologisms during the pandemic (Ladilova/Müller/Gomes/Born 2024; Ladilova/Müller/Gomes in press). While the project has focused on neologisms in written language (press texts) so far, this sub-project will compare them with spoken language in press conferences on the pandemic. In addition to considering the differences between written and oral language (such as the specific word choice or pronunciation) and the cross-cultural differences in the four analyzed languages, the study will also include the analysis of physical resources such as gestures, eye contact between speakers and bodily coordination. Therefore, both qualitative and quantitative methods will be applied. In this presentation, results of the corpus analysis of COVID-19 related neologisms in written discourse and first examples from the oral corpus of press conferences from the first year of the pandemic will be presented.

Katharina Müller é pesquisadora de pós-doutorado no Departamento de Estudos Românicos da Universidade Justus Liebig de Gießen (JLU), onde também trabalha como pesquisadora associada.
