Existentialist Overtones in Milton's Paradise Lost
Simone Couto Gomes . Undergraduate Monograph
ABSTRACT
The monograph shall consist of the discussion and application, to John Milton’s Paradise Lost, of a critical approach that will have as basis the theory of the existentialist philosophers who first established this line of thought, Heidegger and Sartre. The objective of this study is to throw a different and consistent light to John Milton’s Paradise Lost.
Having as starting point the poem in question, fundamental ideas of existentialism shall be recognized and analysed. The facets of existentialism contained in the mentioned work of literature will hence be identified. Amongst the issues that are going to be covered are those of: freedom, choice, authenticity and faith. By means of examples, a logical and convincing monograph will be developed.
