Reception in English Literature
A Reading of Milton's Renaissance Sensitivity and Blake's Romantic Illustrations for L´Allegro and Il Penseroso.
Adalberto Teixeira de Andrade Rocha (Undergraduate Monograph)
ABSTRACT
On my monograph I intend to analize the illustrations
called Mirth and her Companions, and Melancholy and her
Companions by William Blake dated in the 19th Century
with the objective of contrasting them to Milton's
twin poems: L'Allegro and Il Penseroso of the 17th
century. Considering that each set of work uses a
different semiotic form, I intend to go into the
resources that the poet and the artist worked with. I
will keep an eye out for additions that could
possibly have been made by Blake to the subject matter
of the poems and will search for elements that lead us
to place each work in its own historical moment
according to typical characteristics of the times.
