Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)

Assessment item

The assessment task designed for lesson four is aimed at verifying students ability to exchange personal information related to name, age, nationality, jobs and marital students. Students are asked to perform a role paly in a hypothetical situation. One student will take the role of a receptionist in a gym and the other will be the student himself. Then, they exchange roles. The ‘receptionist’ receives a form to fill in with the information he/she has to ask the other student. Teacher evaluates students performance based on the criteria below.

Role play

Interactive communication:

1- interaction is poor, silence is frequent
2- interaction is hindered by inadequate use of grammar/ vocabulary
3- appropriate accomplishment of the task

Grammar:

1- errors are frequent and hinder communication
2- control of grammar is good and mistakes do not hinder communication
3- errors are rare

Vocabulary:

1- use of inadequate vocabulary to the situation
2- correct use of vocabulary despite few errors
3- able to perform the task and correct use of vocabulary

Pronunciation:

1- errors are frequent and hinder communication
2- errors occur but do not interfere with communication
3- errors rarely occur
